This blog represents my opinions and my opinions alone, and certainly doesn't represent the collective thoughts of any of the Boards or organizations that I serve on. Unfortunately I make all sorts of miistakes, I'm a picky eater, I can't sing and I just recently found out I have been spelling certain words in my vocabulary wrong my entire life. That being said, I still continue to muddle ever onward. Welcome.

A Sneak Peek at the New and Improved Blue Park

Here are two views of the proposed replacement play structure for the Blue Park. The Park and Recreation Board will look at different color options next month. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on whether the Blue Park should stay blue?

  1. I like the design although it's hard to tell from the small graphic. My vote is for the blue park to stay blue!!

  3. If forced to have rubber tire underneath....you could even get BLUE tire. :) I would love to see some component of it stay sandy. Bridge Road has a small corner for sand (granted that has weeds in it knee high...maybe not such a good thing ;) )

I like it Blue or Green. Something that doesn't fade as much as maybe a yellow or red would.

What ages is this geared towards??? I don't see a lot that seems to be a bit more "toddler". I avoid the dream park like a plague with little ones typically and the blue park was a nice viable option. The reason I avoid the dream park is there are always tweens playing tag that plow over little kids. Or busloads of kids that are again...running over my toddler.

  4. Sand please. We hate that disgusting rubber mulch. It stinks and gets so hot in the sun.

  5. I like sand, too. You can breathe in the park if it is over 80 degrees.

  6. I like the design. What other colors are possible? A green color would be nice but I know most folks around Monona like to stick with the tried-and-true blue. No rubberized mulch for us. I have never understood how that concept took off. Gross. When will construction start?

  8. To answer some questions:

This design is geared toward the 5-12 year aged crew. Past Board member Lisa jo VonAllmen lobbied hard to create separate toddler area with sand, unfortunately that plan never came to fruition. It was a great idea for some of the same reasons that Anonymous posted.

It is likely that the playground would be replaced in the early Spring 2011.

Those sails are actually canvas sun shades. Maybe we could recycle the triple bikini on Monona Drive for this feature. Talk about Monona pride!

  9. I can tell I'm the minority here, but I like the tire chips better then sand or wood chips.

I think the wood chips smell the best, but I don't notice a smell with the rubber ones (even in the heat), and sometimes think I smell something odd in the sand (we had a stray cat that would use our sand as a litter box, so it might just be in my head).

I really do think the rubber ones seem to stay in place the best. Wood gets crushed, and both wood and sand comes home on clothes much easier, so there seems to be more dirt or concrete visible on sand or wood playgrounds.

  10. The tall blue slide is the tallest one in the city. My son loves it. I hope the new slide is as tall as the existing one...can't tell by the graphics.
